For 2016 the MDX gets a handful of notable upgrades, including a new nine-speed automatic transmission, upgraded Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD®) system, and the AcuraWatch™ suite of safety and driver-assistance technologies.
SUV, Evolved
The stereotypical image of an SUV is of a vehicle that’s heavy, plodding, and unsophisticated. The 2016 Acura MDX shatters that stereotype. An efficiency-focused powertrain featuring Acura’s Super Handling All-Wheel Drive system makes the MDX light on its feet, while the AcuraWatch™ suite of safety features helps it protect its occupants like few other vehicles.
On the inside, the MDX offers plenty of space for either passengers or cargo, plus all of the features one would expect from a luxury automobile. It’s an SUV, evolved.
Performance
The 2016 Acura MDX powertrain gets even better with several noteworthy upgrades for the new model year. Power still comes courtesy of a 3.5-liter V6 with 290 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque, but that engine is now backed by a new nine-speed automatic transmission.
Acura says the new transmission is 66 pounds lighter than the six-speed unit it replaces, features more closely-spaced gear ratios, and 25-percent faster shift times. Those shifts are actuated using a console-mounted electronic shifter for Park, Drive, Neutral, and Reverse, and steering-wheel mounted paddles for manual control.
The MDX comes standard with front-wheel drive, and in that form gets an EPA-rated 22 mpg combined (19 mpg city, 27 mpg highway),* or 23 mpg combined (20 mpg city, 27 mpg highway) with the available engine start-stop system.*
Acura’s Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD®) is once again available as an option, but for 2016 it’s leaner and more efficient than ever. It features a new twin-clutch rear differential that shaves 19 pounds, and can still shuffle torque both front to rear and left to right, improving not only traction but also handling.
The all-wheel drive MDX features the same engine and transmission as the front-wheel drive model, and gets an EPA-rated 21 mpg combined (18 mpg city, 26 mpg highway),* or 22 mpg combined (19 mpg city, 26 mpg highway) with the start-stop system.*
Features
The 2016 Acura MDX is a three-row, midsize luxury SUV. Pricing starts at $42,865.**
Befitting a luxury vehicle, the MDX features a long list of standard equipment, including a power tailgate, 18-inch alloy wheels, leather interior, sport seats with 10-way power adjustment for the driver, sliding second-row seats, third-row seats with one-touch smart slide walk in, multi-function center console with sliding tray, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, ambient lighting, and other features.
In addition to those standard features, the Technology package adds LED puddle lights, GPS-linked climate control, navigation, the AcuraLink® infotainment system, 10-speaker audio system, and other features.
Superseding the Technology package, the Advance package adds Milano premium leather seating surfaces, heated and ventilated front seats, front and rear parking sensors, and auto-dimming sideview mirrors.
Design
The 2016 Acura MDX features a chiseled exterior matched by a luxurious and high-tech interior. On the outside, the Acura-signature shield grille and Jewel Eye® LED headlights make a strong impression, while rounded wheel arches give the MDX a sporty and muscular appearance.
The interior features standard leather seating and a multifunction leather-wrapped steering wheel, as well as some very versatile elements. The redesigned fly-by-wire shift lever allows for more room on the center console, while the sliding 60/40 split-folding second row and 50/50 split-folding third-row bench seats make transitioning from passenger to cargo hauling easy.
Safety
Standard safety equipment on the 2016 Acura MDX includes anti-lock brakes, Vehicle Stability Assist with traction control motion adaptive steering, front, front-side, side curtain, and driver’s knee airbags, and a rearview camera with dynamic grid lines.
For 2016, the MDX is also available with the AcuraWatch™ suite of safety and driver-assistance technologies, including adaptive cruise control, collision-mitigating automatic braking, forward collision warning, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, blind-spot information, rear cross-traffic monitor, and road-departure mitigation.
The road-departure mitigation system uses a monocular camera mounted on the windshield to track lane markers, and a combination of the built-in electronic power steering, stability control, and brake-assist systems to keep the MDX within the proscribed lanes. Multiple visual and audible warnings advise the driver to take corrective action before the system kicks in.
Acura’s rear cross-traffic monitor uses radar sensors mounted in the rear bumper to detect approaching vehicles. If one is detected, arrows indicating the approaching vehicle’s direction are displayed on the central display screen, and an audible warning sounds simultaneously.
