2016 Acura RDX

New for 2016

The RDX gets a few significant updates for 2016, including changes to the 3.5-liter V6 engine, revised styling with Acura’s signature “Jewel Eye” LED headlights, and more tech features.

Solid and Stylish

Certain things get better with age, and that’s the case with the 2016 Acura RDX. Acura’s smallest crossover gets a host of important updates for the new model year, including revised styling, a more-efficient engine, and even more technology and convenience features than before. All of that is built on a strong foundation of solid engineering and thoughtful design that makes the RDX one of the most competent entries in the luxury crossover segment.

Powertrain and Performance

The Acura RDX is only offered with one powertrain option, which received a thorough reworking for the 2016 model year. The 3.5-liter V6 now produces 279 horsepower and 252 pound-feet of torque, increases of 6 hp and 1 lb-ft. Acura says the engine also has a broader torque curve for better acceleration.

The V6 is harnessed to a six-speed automatic transmission, with either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Acura says the all-wheel drive system has also been recalibrated for greater rear torque bias, which should sharpen handling a bit.

Acura also equips the engine with Variable Cylinder Management cylinder deactivation, which shuts off three of the six cylinders under light load to help save fuel. That works to fairly good effect, as the RDX achieves an EPA-rated 23 mpg combined (20 mpg city, 29 mpg highway)* with front-wheel drive, and 22 mpg combined (19 mpg city, 28 mpg highway)* with all-wheel drive. Those represent increases of 1 mpg in the highway category for both drivetrains.

Features and Trims

The 2016 Acura RDX is a five-door, five-seat compact luxury SUV, offered in a single trim level. It’s priced starting at $35,270,** an increase of just $175 over 2015, despite a long list of added features.

Notable standard features include a power tailgate, Bluetooth®, Siri Eyes Free voice control for iPhone users, dual-zone automatic climate control, pushbutton ignition, sport seats with leatherette trim, a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats, a 60/40 split-folding rear seat back, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, auto-dimming rearview mirror, a power moonroof, and a rearview camera.

In addition to those standard features, the AcuraWatch Plus Package includes Acura’s latest electronic driver aids. Beyond that, the Technology Package adds a rear cross-traffic monitor, navigation, an On-Demand Multi-Use Display, premium audio system, Aha capability, HD Radio, GPS-linked climate control, leather seats, and other features.

To get everything there is to offer, ask for the Advance Package, which includes fog lights, heated and ventilated front seats, remote engine start, auto-dimming side mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, parking sensors, and more.

Exterior/Interior

Just like the mechanical and electronic bits, the 2016 Acura RDX’s exterior gets a reworking. The most noticeable change is the addition of “Jewel Eye” headlights that give the RDX a face similar to the MDX crossover and TLX and ILX sedans. There’s also a new grille and LED taillights at the back. The overall look is crisp, sophisticated, and suitably upscale.

On the inside, the 2016 RDX features high-contrast silver and black trim, a multifunction three-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel, matching leather-wrapped shift knob, and paddle shifters for the six-speed automatic transmission. Acura’s Active Sound Control system cancels out unpleasant noises to keep the cabin quiet, while ambient lighting helps set the mood.

A 60/40 split-folding rear bench seat helps this sport-utility vehicle satisfy the “utility” part of its mission. The RDX has a useful 103.5 cubic feet of passenger volume, and 26.1 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear bench up, and 61.3 cubic feet with the seat folded.

Safety

Standard safety equipment on the 2016 Acura RDX includes anti-lock brakes, stability and traction controls, and a full complement of airbags. The optional AcuraWatch Plus Package adds features like forward-collision warning, lane-keep assist, lane-departure warning, and a Collision Mitigation Braking System. The Technology Package add a blind-spot information system, and rear cross-traffic monitor; the Advance Package includes those features, plus front and rear parking sensors.

Bottom Line

The 2016 Acura RDX is a tech savvy and sporty small crossover that’s in keeping with Acura’s penchant for quality, performance, and luxury.
