Popular Science Magazine Names Next-Generation Acura NSX ‘Best of What’s New’ Winner

The advanced technology behind Acura's next-generation NSX supercar – due to launch this spring – has earned the vehicle a 2015 "Best of What's New" award from Popular Science magazine. The NSX emerged from a field of thousands to snag one of 100 coveted spots for the magazine's top annual prize, a feat reflective of Acura's innovative approach behind the creation of its new electrified supercar.

John Ikeda, vice president and general manager of Acura, welcomed the award and credited the recognition to the luxury automaker's cutting-edge performance technologies.

"The Acura NSX challenges conventional notions of supercar performance," he said. "With its three-motor Sport Hybrid powertrain, the NSX is propelling Acura performance in an amazing new direction and we can't wait to share the results with our customers."

Introducing the Next-Generation Acura NSX

The next-generation Acura NSX is a mid-engine, two-seater supercar. Powered by a high-output V6 hybrid powertrain, the NSX combines the acceleration that supercar drivers crave with the high efficiency often lacking in traditional supercar design.

The latest model revitalizes the classic Acura NSX first introduced in 1991. Like its modern counterpart, the original version of the NSX was groundbreaking, as it was the first car to have a lightweight aluminum construction for the body structure, body panels, engine and suspension. It was also the first to feature an engine with a variable volume intake manifold and variable valve timing. The NSX line continued for 14 years, with each subsequent model offering incremental improvements upon its predecessors.

The most recent model of the Acura NSX was produced in 2005, and supercar fans have been eagerly anticipating its return to the Acura lineup over the last decade. After many years of rumors, the next-generation Acura NSX is finally due to go on sale in just a few months.

Innovative Technology Supercar Drivers Will Love

There’s a lot of new technology packed into the next-generation Acura NSX. For example:

  • A new Sport Hybrid Super Handling All-Wheel-Drive (SH-AWD) powertrain uses three electric motors to improve acceleration, braking and cornering, allowing the supercar to deliver all-around great performance. Acura is the first supercar manufacturer to harness this groundbreaking technology for its superior control and performance that supercar drivers crave.
  • The new Acura NSX also features direct yaw control. This new technology continuously and dynamically distributes the torque created by the electric motors in order to give the driver firm control over the car’s cornering at all times.
  • In addition to advanced technology beneath the hood, the next-generation Acura NSX also boasts high-quality body construction and elegant design. The Popular Science award recognizes the cabin's highly ergonomic design, which allows the driver and passenger to relax in comfort while enjoying the supercar's smooth, breathtaking ride.

What Does a “Best of What’s New” Award Mean?

Popular Science is the world's biggest science and technology magazine. Editor-in-Chief Cliff Ransom said the "Best of What's New" honor is intended to recognize the "innovations that surprise and amaze us – those that challenge our view of what's possible in the future." Popular Science presents these awards to breakthrough products in 12 categories: aviation, computing, gadgets, engineering, green technologies, entertainment, security, software, home, recreation and health. According to Ransom, the winning products represent “a revolution” in the industries that created them.

The winners of the “Best of What’s New” award are featured in the annual December issue of Popular Science (now available), which explains in detail the reasons behind the selection of each product. In the case of the Acura NSX, the prize primarily reflects the advancement in supercar performance Acura achieved through the introduction of the new SH-AWD powertrain.

Recognition of the Acura Brand

Popular Science is not the only publisher to recognize Acura’s pioneering work in creating the world's highest-performing supercars. Edmunds.com recently recognized the ability of Acura luxury vehicles to retain their value after five years of ownership, further cementing the brand's extraordinary long-term quality.

Acura is a Japanese automotive manufacturer with a reputation for creating luxury and high-performance vehicles. Since its beginnings in Japan in the mid-1980s, Acura has become a highly popular and sought-after brand worldwide, including the competitive U.S. market.

The Acura range of luxury vehicles includes five key model lines. In addition to the RLX luxury sedan, which is the brand’s flagship vehicle, Acura also offers:

  • A performance luxury sedan (TLX);
  • A sport sedan (ILX);
  • A five-passenger luxury crossover SUV (RDX); and
  • A seven-passenger, three-row luxury SUV (MDX).

The Acura MDX is the nation’s best-selling three-row luxury SUV of all time. When the next-generation NSX joins Acura’s lineup in early 2016, it will add a mid-engine supercar to the brand’s already superb range.
