The 411 of Flying Lessons

The first step to experiencing the freedom of piloting a plane on your own is to find a respected training center for flying lessons. Often those interested in learning how to fly are unsure of what to expect and thus a little bit afraid to jump in. To ease those fears and understand the process better, Hall Acura Virginia Beach has provided you with some information.

How much time is required?

If you focus and put in the study, learning to fly is not extremely difficult. You should plan on spending between 45 and 80 hours to complete your training.

How long does each lesson last?

Typically most lessons consist of a one-hour flight. The entire process might last up to two hours because lessons often feature pre- and post-flight discussions about preparation, evaluation, and improving your skills. Initially, there will be strong emphasis on aviation vocabulary terms, understanding weather conditions, and how to communicate over the radio.

What’s ground school?

Flight training is divided into ground school and flight training. In ground school, you’ll learn the principles, procedures, and regulations necessary for flying. You’ll also fly a “simulator” to get familiar with the cockpit of an airplane. Ground school is generally offered both at the flight school and through home-study computer programs.

When do I fly?

Typically, you’ll go up in the air on your first lesson accompanied by your flight instructor. In the pre-solo phase, you’ll learn how to taxi to the runway, take off and land, and fly around the airport traffic pattern without assistance from your instructor. Before you’re able to move on to longer trips and solo experience, you’ll be expected to have a firm understanding of winds and other weather conditions, airport traffic patterns, and how to spot potential problems. It’s ultimately up to your instructor to decide when you’re ready for your first solo flight. As your skills improve, you’ll progress to flying longer trips to other airports.

What kind of certification will I receive?

Flight school won’t earn you a license. Instead you’ll graduate with a certificate. You can earn certificates in sport, recreational, or private pilot categories. Sport and recreational flyers don’t need the same type of training private pilots receive.

What about passengers during my training flights?

When flying solo, student pilots cannot carry passengers. The only time friends or family can accompany you is when the instructor is in the airplane.
