Then and Now: Charting the 2016 Acura NSX's Road to Production

The 2016 Acura NSX is slated to release in the fall. Naturally, we at Hall Acura Virginia Beach can’t wait for its arrival. But since we can’t travel to the future, we thought we’d take a look at the sport car’s illustrious past. Keep reading for more.

Debuting as a Honda, the original NSX concept was given the code name NS-X, which stood for New Sportscar Experimental.

Flash forward a year and the original NS-X concept evolved into a two-seater development version, eventually giving way to the production NSX that was comprised of an all-aluminum body and utilized an all-aluminum V6 engine.

A sad year for NSX fans as production of the first generation NSX comes to an end.

Still in mourning, NSX fans receive a glimmer of hope from Tetsuo Iwamura, CEO of Honda America, who announced a new supercar was in the works. Sadly, four years would pass before anything concrete was unveiled.

Acura announces a second generation NSX concept car, promising a proper successor to the beloved supercar that “would be exhilarating to drive but also environmentally friendly.”

The second-generation Acura NSX debuts at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The car is an instant hit, wowing critics and fans the world over. And indicating a very bright future for the Acura brand.

With excitement at an all-time high, Acura announces the official production version of the NSX.

The production version of the 2016 Acura NSX debuts at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Pleasingly, it retains the concept version’s striking and futuristic visual elements. What’s more, Acura announces that it will be powered by a twin-turbocharged DOHC 3.5-liter V6 engine that is mated to an electric motor, in keeping with the automaker’s initial promise of a supercar that was both exhilarating and eco-friendly.
